NOTES: Elizabeth now resides _ 3317 Avenue A, Council Bluffs, Iowa, 51501. Don enlisted in the Army Air Force on July 9, 1940 at Ft Crook (now Offutt AFB), Nebraska. He was stationed at Randolph Field from July 1940 to May 1944 as a field lighting specialist and then as an aircraft sheet metal fabricator. He took civilian flight training at Randolph in a J_3 Cub and soloed on March 3, 1941. Elizabeth kept the "furlough money" of Don's unmarried friends in the white Bible that she carried in her wedding. He was transferred to Gieger Field in Spokane, Washington and stayed there until November 1944. He then went to the South Pacific and served in New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. On October 4, 1945 he was rated as a Flight Engineer in C_47s (the venerable DC_3 or Gooney Bird). He participated in aerial troop deployments for the Philippine liberation. Don was also on the crew of one of the first three A.A.F. planes to land in mainland Japan after the Japanese surrender. He was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant on January 3, 1946. He reenlisted on May 29, 1948 and was stationed at Lowry AFB, Connally AFB, Chanute Field, Randolph Field, Forbes AFB, and then in August 1951 he went to Korea. Don was a Flight Engineer on B_29s (Boeing Superfortress). He was with the 372 Bombardment Squadron, 307 Bombardment Wing Medium (Combat Echelon). Don was on a night bombing mission the evening of September 12, 1951. The aircraft was returning from the mission low on fuel and diverted to K_2 Airfield (now Osan AB). On final approach at 0410 hours, September 13, 1951, the B_29 crashed for unknown reasons. The were no survivors of the crash. In the words of Don's commanding officer, "He was an excellent airman who performed all assigned tasks in a cheerful and efficient manner, thereby winning the commendation of his superiors and the respect of his comrades." Don would have sewn on Master Sergeant stripes in 30 more days. |
