NOTES: Erwin was brought by his father, Herman, to America to avoid military service in Germany according to his son, Erwin T. However, it could have been that Erwin was simply sent by his father to the U.S. This was most probably near the start of World War I. Erwin initially settled in the Chicago area. Herman either returned to Germany or remained in Germany with his family. Erwin's Social Security application lists place of birth as Leitsweiler, Germany. He is buried in Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois. Erwin first owned a bakery at Kedgie and Armatage, and later moved his business to 5244 Irving Park Blvd. The family lived above the bakery for 20 years. Clara's parents were Gustave Gnatkowski and Anna Toloff. Clara listed her middle name as Henrietta on her Social Security application. She is also buried in Acacia Park Cemetery. |

NOTES: Between 1936 and 1939, Erwin attended Iowa State University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. (He is mentioned in a book called,"One Magic Year, 1939, An Ironman Remembers", written by Al Couppee.) In 1942, Erwin enlisted in the U.S. Army as a buck private, coming out three years later as a captain with shrapnel in his right arm, ending any further baseball potential. He earned the Purple Heart on a night patrol, January 13, leading his platoon in a rubber boat crossing of the Roer River in Germany. They were to determine the advisability of a major crossing of the river at the point, depth, current, possibility of mines in the area, ect. The platoon got close enough to hear the Germans voices. They had accomplished their job but on the way out all hell had broken loose. Erv wound up in a hospital in England to recover from his wounds. However, some days later he was informed that the 29th Infantry Division used the information supplied by Erv and his platoon and that they had crossed the river. After he had recovered Erv, returned to the U.S.A. and played one more year with Oshkosh and then went to work with Equitable Life Insurance Company in Naperville, Illinois. He later retired and is now a grandpa, great-grandpa and loving husband. Erwin and Norma now live in Naperville, Illinois. Erwin provided the initial information on this family branch, although much of the German genealogy is believed to have been done by one of his cousins. |

| NOTES: After dying in a tragic auto accident,
Homer wanted his ashes spread over Silverado Canyon in
California. That is where he lived when he was a little boy. Delivered
newspapers as a youngster and was bitten in the butt by a German Shepard.
Aunt Joy told me that he tried to go after a mountain lion so she taught
him to shoot the 22 rifle that his father had. Well when their father
found out that they were shooting it he sold it so they wouldn't harm
themselves. One time he was chasing after a mountain lion cub with a 22
rifle and slid down the mountain and tore up his new blue jeans. When he
got home his father told him not to do that again because the mother lion
is never far away. He wanted to play football so bad that his father told
him no. So, he forged his daddy's name on the form so he could play ball
and later broke his foot. He also cooked at Jerry's Cafe in Orange,
California as a young man or teenager.
His father also wanted him to go to Art School because dad was a
very good artist but he didn't want to do that and later regretted it. He
also did some farm work for Aunt Edith's daughter in Santa Ana. Aunt Edith
started a business and it was called Birdwell Beach Britches. To this day
it is still in operation but the name may be changed.
Aunt Donna also remembers her mother coming to visit one day while
her father was at work. Her mother had brought a wheelbarrow with some
candy in it and Aunt Donna sat in it and broke it. Donna was about six
years old at that time. Her mother then said that she had to go before
their daddy came home. She came and left with her sister Hattie May. Woody
also was wounded in Vietnam. When he was packing his commanding officer's
suitcase a bullet came through the window and zapped him right in his
butt. He did not receive the Purple Heart for this that I know of,
but he does have numerous awards from the military including two Vietnam
Medals. He was a 24-year veteran of the US Army, retiring in the rank of
Sergeant Major. His parents were Homer Mann and Vera Samuels. From the
genealogy by Theresa Elliott. |
