The Genealogy
NOTE: The number preceding each name reflects the generation of Prasses in America. Dashed lines mean the end of one family line and a return to a previous generation.

NOTE: This family is responsible for the generation of the Prasse name in the later family that follows. It is unknown if any members of this family later immigrated to America.

NOTE: This is the start of this Prasse blood line. It was started by the marriage of Leopold Joseph Witte (third generation below) to the widow Clara Elisabeth Prasse. Clara Elisabeth was a Prasse by marriage. The fourth generation of this Prasse family is the one that immigrated to America.

Markendorf, Hanover, Germany

m. June __, 1798

Buer, Hanover, Germany

Clara Elisabeth Prasse (nee: Kohmoller)

(see entry for Clara above)

No known children by this marriage.

NOTES: Leopold assumed the name Prasse and changed his first name as well when he married Clara. This was German custom when a man died and left a widow with a son and an estate. If this family isn't confusing to you read on!

Franz remarried after Clara died.

m. February 7, 1812

Buer_Osnabruck, Hanover, Germany

Clara Marie Diekmann

b. March 25, 1775

Buer_Melle, Hanover, Germany

d. March 27, 1837

Markendorf, Hanover, Germany

NOTES: The marriage document is quite extensive. It's a good thing because this family line gets very complicated, what with all the name changing and various partially related people floating around. Franz was a former farmer/grocer at Markendorf in 1812 when he was married. He must have given up or sold the business after Clara Prasse died. Franz died of pneumonia and Clara died from consumption. See supplemental genealogy for the Diekmann line.

4

Friedrich Wilhelm Prasse (AKA: Frederick)

b. January 18, 1814

Lolingdorf, Hanover, Germany

d. November 10, 1872

Buer, Hanover, Germany

Anna Marie Ilsabein Buermann

b. January 30, 1818

Wetter, Hanover, Germany

d. August 24, 1848

Markendorf, Hanover, Germany

NOTES: The 1870 Census lists a Frederick Prasse (age 56). Frederick enlisted in the Missouri State Militia on January 18, 1862. Frederick was most probably a farmer. Anna's father was Johann Rudolf Friedrich Buermann (b. May 21, 1780 at Buer; d. September 4, 1832 at Wetter); son of Christian Matthias Buermann and Marie Elisabeth Dreckstroter. Her mother was Margaretha Maria Meyer (b. January 1, 1784 at Buer; d. April 9, 1834 at Wetter); daughter of Anton Heinrich Meyer and Catharine Margarethe Lowekamp. Anna died of heart failure.

5

Catharine Wilhelmine Caroline Prasse

b. June 12, 1841

Markendorf, Hanover, Germany

d. August 20, 1860

St. Charles, Missouri

NOTES: The 1860 Census lists Caroline (age 18) as a daughter of Frederick. Apparently, the census taker had a difficult time figuring out who was who in this family. This will become very obvious when you read the census listings for the rest of the family. A tragedy befell this family in 1860. Three of Frederick's daughters died suddenly in August, two on the same day. Sue Ladage thinks that Catharine, Florentine, and Clara all died of an epidemic, possibly cholera. Catharine is believed buried in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, St. Charles, Missouri.

d. ______________ __, _____

NOTES: The 1860 Census lists a John H. Prasse (age 16) as a son of Frederick Prasse. The 1870 Census lists Jobst H. Prasse (age 25) living in St. Charles County, Missouri. A wife and two children are also listed. Henry's will of 1873 indicates that he had a government pension. He enlisted in Company B, 1st Battalion, Missouri State Militia on January 18, 1862. He later transferred to Company K and served during the Civil War in the Union Army. Henry died of consumption (most likely tuberculosis) which he contracted during the war. He was a farmer and followed the Lutheran faith. Auguste remarried Heinrich William Lutter on February 10, 1874 in St. Charles.
