Sophie Tewes Prasse

(See previous entry for Sophie under Konrad Prasse (1).)

NOTES: Fred, Sophie, and the seven other children (Fred was already in America) sailed by steam boat to America in the fall of 1849. They arrived in New Orleans after seven weeks and three days. They came up the Mississippi River but were forced to stop in St. Louis because the river was frozen over. Sophie had become ill during the voyage and it was feared that she would never see America. She passed away during the winter at St. Louis. In the spring of 1850, Fred and six of the children (Amelia stayed in St. Louis) traveled by river boat to Savanna, Illinois. They bought a team and wagon and marched overland to Harlem Township in Stephenson County, Illinois. Fred bought 80 acres of timber from a Mr. Thomas who had purchased it from the U.S. government for $1.25 an acre. The original deed was signed by President James K. Polk. Fred cleared the land, built a log cabin, and started farming. Fred was a founding member of Salem Evangelical Church in 1854. At one time all of the children and families were members of Salem church. Later, some of the families moved to Lena and joined Emmanuel Lutheran Church while others joined St. John's Evangelical Church in Freeport.

NOTES: Christoph and Louise had a son, Johan Heinrich Vehmeier (Henry). Henry was born on April 16, 1846 in Germany. Due to family problems, Louise and her son immigrated to America. She knew a Ludwig Heithecker of Epplyanna, Illinois and there was the possibility of marriage to him. Louise and Henry arrived by boat in New Orleans. The trip took 11 weeks and had some thrills. Once the boat got stuck on a sand bar and the captain had all the passengers run from side to side, trying to rock the boat loose. Henry fell through a hatchway on the deck and struck his head on an anchor chain. He wasn't hurt seriously. They were finally towed off the bar by steam boats. Food also ran short during the voyage. Some stowaways stole and sold food on the ship. They were caught and flogged. Louise and Henry came up the Mississippi River to Davis, Illinois where they had friends. When Louise arrived in Epplyanna, Ludwig had already married someone else. Louise found work and later met Fred Prasse. Henry Vehmeier had a farm north of Eleroy, Illinois
