worth it. Much of the original document reproduced below was in minute German
script. The translation took a few weeks to do with a magnifying glass. The

On February 7, 1812, before Justus Warneohe, Recorder of Civil Affairs of the Buer parish, Department of Ober-Ems, Osnabruck district, Canton Essen, appeared the adult Franz Heinrich Prasse, nee Witte, 35 years 9 months old, born in Buer, Canton Melle, who was formerly a grocer, now residing at Markendorf; son of Johann Heinrich Witte, a laborer and spinner at Buer, Canton Melle, who in May 1787 died at Osnabruck; (This is proven by the notarial document of the Justice of the Peace at Melle dated November 21, 1811.) and Margarethe Elsabein Witte, nee Aping, who lived at Buer, Canton Melle, where she died at 29 years old according to the certificate dated November 18, 1877. [This marriage is] at the discretion of the widower [Franz Heinrich Witte] of Clare Elisabeth Prasse* who died according to the certificate dated April 16, 1810. [NOTE: Other documents show a death date of April 16, 1811.] And [appeared] the adult maiden, Clare Marie Diekmann, 36 years old, born in Wetter, a spinner by profession, living at Markendorf; daughter of Jurgen Adolph Diekmann a mill tenant who lived at Wetter, where he died at the age of 53 years 8 months according to the certificate dated February 10, 1780; and Catharine Elisabeth Diekmann, nee Schroder, a midwife, 80 years old, living at Markendorf. She is present, gives her consent, and commands this marriage to be performed. The marriage announcement was posted on the main door of the parish first at noon on November 10, 1811 and second at noon on November 17, 1811. After reading aloud Chapter 6, titled Marriage, of the Napoleonic Code; examining the birth certificates of the bride and groom, the death certificates of the groom's parents, the death certificate of the bride's father, and taken the sworn testimony of the groom and four witnesses that the dates of death or last residence of the groom's grandparents are not known; with no objection to this marriage; so we ask the bride and groom if they willingly take each other as husband and wife. Each one said "Yes!" to the other. Let it be known in the name of the law that Franz Heinrich Prasse and Clare Marie Diekmann are united in the bonds of matrimony. This document is witnessed and undersigned by Friedrich Viewohner, step-son-in-law of the groom, a farmhand, 35 years old living at Markendorf; Friedrich Heinrich Prasse, step-son of the groom, a farmhand, 28 years old living at Markendorf; Heinrich Schember, brother-in-law of the groom, a gardener, 42 years old living at Meesdorf; Christian Diekmann, brother of the bride, a day-laborer, 36 years old living at Markendorf; the groom; and myself. (The bride and bride's mother do not know how to write.)

* Note: German custom was that if a man married a widow with a male child who was heir to his father's estate, the man took the married surname of the widow. Hence Franz Heinrich Witte, who married Clare Elizabeth Prasse, a widow having a son, Friedrich Heinrich Prasse, changed his last name from Witte to Prasse upon marriage. He kept the Prasse surname by marriage when he subsequently married Clare Marie Diekmann. This was particularly confusing since both Franz' spouses had the first name of Clare.
